About Agape World Missions

Who We Are

Agape World Missions is a registered charity that seeks to relieve sickness and preserve health among people in deprived areas in developing countries starting with Africa.

We organise health and education missions to underserved communities. We provide healthcare outreach services to schools and communities. AWM also provides scholarships to indigent students who otherwise would have dropped out of the school system. Working with the local people and institutions, we formulate solutions to local health needs and help to train local health and community social workers.

Our Genesis

In the late 1990s, our founder, Dr. Onyeabo Obasi, visited a Dutch doctor who was the Medical Superintendent at a rural mission hospital in Uburu, Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria. This health facility, along with a school, was set up in 1913 by the Church of Scotland Mission in a place the pioneer missionary described as a 'City of salt lake'.

This doctor informed him that he had a patient on the ward with a jaw fracture whom he could not manage conveniently. The young patient's family could not financially afford to take him to the tertiary hospital many miles away. As a dentist, having worked in oral surgery, Dr. Obasi went and saw this patient. Working with the Dutch doctor, they successfully treated this young man's fractured jaw and sent him home.

That was the beginning of his formal association with this rural hospital. While working at a city hospital over 100km away, he began to travel to this rural hospital monthly to provide oral healthcare to patients, staff, and the community free of charge.

Years later while working in the UK, he often shared the plight of these rural disadvantaged folks, and how they are unable to access healthcare. A few people came together and decided to make a difference in the situations these and other vulnerable people around the world go through, starting with Africa. This is how Agape World Missions (AWM) was born.
